Bagpipes
Bagpipes are an old and special instrument. They are famous in Scotland and Ireland. A player blows air into a big bag and squeezes it with their arm. The air then goes into pipes that make a loud, buzzing music.
How Bagpipes Work
The player blows into a tube called a blowpipe to fill the bag with air. The bag is usually made from leather or rubber and is held under the arm. Squeezing the bag pushes air out through the pipes. One pipe, called the chanter, plays the tune. The other pipes, called drones, play steady background notes.
Bagpipes and Culture
Bagpipes are most famous in Scotland, but many countries have their own kinds. They were once used to help soldiers march into battle. Today, bagpipes are played at parades, weddings, and funerals. Players often wear kilts, which are plaid skirts, when they perform. The music is very loud and can be heard from far away.
