George Frideric Handel
George Frideric Handel was a composer born in Germany in 1685, the same year as Bach. He later moved to England and became a British citizen. Handel wrote operas, orchestral pieces, and grand choral works. His most famous piece is the Messiah, which includes the powerful Hallelujah chorus. Handel's music is grand, joyful, and full of energy. It has been played at celebrations and ceremonies for over 280 years.
From Germany to England
Young Handel loved music, but his father wanted him to become a lawyer. Handel secretly practiced on a small keyboard hidden in his attic. When a duke heard him play, he convinced Handel's father to let the boy study music. Handel traveled to Italy to learn opera, then moved to London, England. The British people loved his music, and he spent the rest of his life there.
The Messiah
Handel wrote his most famous work, the Messiah, in just 24 days. It tells the story of Jesus using beautiful solo singing and powerful choruses. The Hallelujah chorus is the most famous part. When King George II first heard it, he stood up because it was so moving. The audience stood up too. People still stand during the Hallelujah chorus today. Handel also wrote the Water Music and Music for the Royal Fireworks.
