How Paper Cutting Works

An artist folds a piece of paper and cuts away small sections. When the paper is unfolded, a symmetrical design appears. Some artists cut freehand without any plan. Others draw a design first and then cut along the lines. Red paper is traditional in Chinese paper cutting.

China has a long history of paper cutting called jianzhi. Red paper cuttings are put on windows during the Chinese New Year. In Poland, paper cutting called wycinanki uses colorful layers.
