Bridges
Bridges connect places that are separated by water, valleys, or roads. People have been building bridges for thousands of years. The earliest bridges were just logs or stones laid across a stream. Today, bridges can stretch for miles and carry cars, trains, and even pipelines.
Types of Bridges
There are many kinds of bridges. Beam bridges are flat and simple, like a plank across a ditch. Arch bridges use a curved shape to hold heavy loads. Suspension bridges hang from thick cables attached to tall towers. Each type works best in different situations.
Building a Bridge
Engineers carefully plan every bridge before building starts. They study the ground, the weather, and how much weight the bridge must hold. Workers build strong supports called piers that go deep into the ground or water. A big bridge can take many years to finish.
Fun Facts

- Ancient Romans built stone bridges so well that some are still standing 2,000 years later.
- Suspension bridge cables are made of thousands of thin steel wires twisted together.
