Pyramids
Pyramids
Pyramids are massive structures shaped like triangles. The most famous pyramids are in Egypt, where they were built as tombs for pharaohs, or kings. The ancient Egyptians believed the pyramids would help their kings reach the afterlife. Other cultures in Mexico and Central America also built pyramids.
The Great Pyramid of Giza
The Great Pyramid of Giza is the biggest pyramid ever built. It was made from about 2.3 million stone blocks. Each block weighs as much as a car! It took about 20 years and thousands of workers to build. For over 3,800 years, it was the tallest building in the world.
How Pyramids Were Built
Scientists still study how the Egyptians moved such heavy stones without modern machines. Workers probably used ramps, rollers, and sleds to slide the stones into place. They cut the blocks so carefully that you cannot fit a piece of paper between them. It was an incredible achievement for people living over 4,500 years ago.
