Hawaii
Hawaii is a state in the United States, but it is not on the mainland. It is a group of islands in the Pacific Ocean. Hawaii became the 50th state in 1959. Its capital is Honolulu. The islands were formed by volcanoes long ago.
Islands and Volcanoes
Hawaii has eight main islands. The biggest is called the Big Island, or Hawaii Island. It has active volcanoes that still erupt today. Mauna Kea is one of the tallest mountains in the world when measured from its base under the sea. The warm ocean around Hawaii is full of colorful fish and sea turtles.
People and Culture
Hawaiian people have their own language and traditions. The hula is a famous dance that tells stories. People often greet each other with the word aloha. Surfing was invented in Hawaii long ago. Pineapples and sugarcane are grown on some of the islands.
