Lesotho

Lesotho is a country in southern Africa. It is one of only three countries in the world that sit completely inside another country. Lesotho is surrounded on all sides by South Africa. It is often called the Kingdom in the Sky because it has so many tall mountains.

Land and Weather

Lesotho is very high above sea level. Even its lowest point is higher than many mountains in other countries. The land has rocky peaks, green valleys, and fast rivers. In winter, it can snow in Lesotho, which is rare in Africa. People even ski on some of the mountain slopes. Summers are cool and rainy compared to nearby lands.

People and Culture

The people of Lesotho are called Basotho. They speak Sesotho and English. Many Basotho wear colorful wool blankets to stay warm in the cool mountain air. These blankets have special patterns and are part of their traditions. Horses are an important way to travel in the steep hills. Music, dance, and storytelling are big parts of daily life.
