Liberia
Liberia is a country on the west coast of Africa. It sits next to the Atlantic Ocean. Liberia was started in 1822 as a place where freed slaves from the United States could live. The country became independent in 1847. Its capital city, Monrovia, was named after an American president.
Land and Nature
Liberia has warm weather all year long. It has sandy beaches, thick rainforests, and winding rivers. Many animals live in its forests, including pygmy hippos, chimpanzees, and forest elephants. The country also has lots of rain, especially from May to October. Farmers grow rice, cassava, and rubber from rubber trees.
People and Language
About five million people live in Liberia. English is the official language, but many other local languages are spoken too. Music and drumming are important parts of Liberian culture. People enjoy foods made with rice, fish, and spicy sauces. Soccer is the most popular sport in the country.
