New Mexico

New Mexico is a state in the southwest part of the United States. It shares a border with Mexico. The land is full of deserts, mountains, and canyons. People have lived here for thousands of years. The state is known for its bright sunshine and colorful sunsets.

Land and Weather

Much of New Mexico is dry desert with cactus and sagebrush. The Rio Grande river flows through the middle of the state. White Sands National Park has hills made of white gypsum sand. The weather is usually warm and sunny. Snow falls in the high mountains in winter.

People and Culture

Santa Fe is the capital and one of the oldest cities in the United States. Many people speak both English and Spanish. Native American pueblos have stood here for hundreds of years. The state is famous for spicy chili peppers. Artists love the bright colors and light of the desert.
