Slovakia

Slovakia is a country in central Europe. It has mountains in the north and flat land in the south. The country is covered with forests, rivers, and small villages. Slovakia has more castles per person than almost any other country. The capital city is Bratislava.

Mountains and Nature

The Tatra Mountains in the north have sharp peaks and deep lakes. Brown bears, wolves, and lynxes live in the forests. In winter, people ski and snowboard on the slopes. In summer, people hike, climb, and bike. Slovakia also has many caves to explore. Some of the caves even have ice inside them all year long.

Castles and Cities

Slovakia has more than 180 castles and hundreds more castle ruins. One of the biggest is Spis Castle, which sits on a high hill. Bratislava, the capital, has an old town with narrow streets and colorful buildings. It sits on the Danube River. People in Slovakia speak Slovak and enjoy foods like bryndzove halusky, which are dumplings with sheep cheese.
