Suriname
Suriname is a small country on the northern coast of South America. It is the smallest country on the continent. Most of Suriname is covered in rainforest. The country has rivers, wildlife, and small villages deep in the jungle. Its capital city is Paramaribo.
Rainforest and Animals
About 90 percent of Suriname is covered in rainforest. Jaguars, monkeys, sloths, and bright toucans live in the trees. Rivers run through the forest and are home to caimans and piranhas. Some areas are protected nature reserves where animals are safe. Scientists often visit Suriname to study the plants and animals. The forest is quiet but full of life.
People and Language
Suriname is home to people from many backgrounds, including Indigenous groups, Africans, Indians, Chinese, and Dutch. The country's main language is Dutch, which is rare for South America. Many people also speak Sranan Tongo, a local language. Paramaribo has wooden buildings from long ago that are now protected as a world heritage site.
