The River Country

The Gambia is all about its river. The Gambia River runs through the middle of the country from east to west. People use the river for fishing, farming, and traveling by boat. Along the river, you can see hippos, monkeys, and many colorful birds. The country is also known for its beaches on the Atlantic Ocean. Visitors come from around the world to enjoy the sunshine and sand.

The Gambia is sometimes called 'the Smiling Coast of Africa' because the people are so friendly. English is the official language, but people also speak Mandinka, Wolof, and Fula. Music is very important here, and the kora is a special harp with 21 strings. Popular foods include rice with peanut sauce and fresh fish.
