Turkmenistan is a country in Central Asia. Most of the country is covered by the Karakum Desert, one of the largest sand deserts in the world. Turkmenistan has huge amounts of natural gas underground. The country was once an important stop on the ancient Silk Road trade route.

About 6 million people live in Turkmenistan. The capital is Ashgabat, a city known for its white marble buildings. About 80 percent of the country is desert. The country borders the Caspian Sea to the west.
