Japan is an island nation in East Asia with a culture that is thousands of years old. Japanese people are known for their respect, politeness, and attention to detail. Japan has given the world amazing art, food, and inventions. It is a place where ancient temples stand next to modern skyscrapers.
Traditions and Values
Respect is very important in Japanese culture. People bow to greet each other and show politeness. The cherry blossom season, called hanami, is a time when families picnic under beautiful pink trees. Origami, the art of paper folding, has been practiced in Japan for hundreds of years. The Japanese also value cleanliness and take off their shoes before entering a home.
Food and Festivals
Japanese food is famous around the world. Sushi, ramen, and tempura are popular dishes. Japanese people believe food should look as good as it tastes. Festivals called matsuri are held throughout the year with parades, music, and fireworks. Children's Day on May 5 is celebrated by flying colorful fish-shaped kites called koinobori.
