The Navajo

The Navajo, who call themselves Dine, are the largest Native American nation in the United States. They live in the Southwest, in parts of Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. The Navajo are known for their beautiful weaving, silver jewelry, and strong connection to the land. Their language and traditions are an important part of American history.

Navajo Arts and Crafts

Navajo women are famous for weaving beautiful rugs and blankets with bold geometric patterns. Navajo silversmiths create stunning turquoise and silver jewelry. Sand painting is a sacred art used in healing ceremonies. The designs are made with colored sand on the ground and are carefully swept away after the ceremony.

The Navajo Language

The Navajo language is very complex and beautiful. During World War II, Navajo Code Talkers used their language to send secret messages that the enemy could not break. This helped the United States win important battles. Today, the Navajo Nation works hard to teach young people their language so it will not be lost.
