Brachiosaurus

Brachiosaurus was one of the tallest dinosaurs that ever lived. Its name means "arm lizard" because its front legs were longer than its back legs. It lived about 154 million years ago. This giant could look over the roof of a four-story building!

Super Sized

Brachiosaurus could be up to 85 feet long and 40 feet tall. It weighed about 60 tons, which is as heavy as 10 elephants! Its neck alone was about 30 feet long. Its heart had to be very strong to pump blood all the way up to its head.

Treetop Feeder

Brachiosaurus used its long neck to reach leaves high up in trees. Other dinosaurs could not reach this food. It ate plants like conifers, ginkgoes, and ferns. It had to eat about 900 pounds of food every day to survive. That is like eating 3,600 heads of lettuce!

Fun Facts

  • Brachiosaurus had nostrils on top of its head, above its eyes.
  • A single Brachiosaurus leg bone is taller than most adult humans.
  • It took about 10 years for a baby Brachiosaurus to grow to full size.

Did You Know?

Brachiosaurus is the giant dinosaur shown eating from trees in the first Jurassic Park movie. Unlike most other sauropods, its front legs were longer than its back legs, giving it an upward-sloping body!
