Ecosystems

An ecosystem is a community of living things and the place where they live. It can be a forest, a pond, a desert, or even a tiny puddle. Plants, animals, bugs, and even the dirt and water all work together. Each part has a job to do. When they all work well, the ecosystem stays healthy.

Living and Nonliving Parts

Every ecosystem has living parts and nonliving parts. Living parts are things like trees, birds, fish, and worms. Nonliving parts are things like rocks, soil, water, sunlight, and air. Living things need the nonliving parts to grow. For example, plants need sun and water to make food. Animals need plants and clean air to live.

Food Chains

In an ecosystem, living things eat other things to get energy. This is called a food chain. The sun helps plants grow. Then bugs or rabbits eat the plants. Then bigger animals, like foxes or owls, eat the smaller animals. When plants and animals die, tiny bugs and worms break them down. This makes the soil rich again.

Types of Ecosystems

There are many kinds of ecosystems on Earth. Some are on land, like forests, grasslands, and deserts. Others are in water, like oceans, lakes, and rivers. Each one has its own special plants and animals. A polar bear lives in the cold Arctic. A camel lives in the hot desert. Every ecosystem is different and amazing.

Taking Care of Ecosystems

Ecosystems can get hurt when people cut down too many trees or throw trash in the water. Pollution can make animals sick. We can help by planting trees, picking up litter, and saving water. Even small kids can help protect nature. When we care for ecosystems, we care for our whole planet.

Fun Facts

  • A single tree can be a tiny ecosystem for bugs, birds, and squirrels.
  • Coral reefs are home to more than 4,000 kinds of fish.
  • Rainforests have more plants and animals than any other place on land.

Did You Know?

Earthworms are super helpers in an ecosystem. They dig through the soil and make it soft so plants can grow big and strong.
