Grassland Ecosystems

Grasslands are big, open areas where grasses are the main plants. They are found on every continent except Antarctica. Grasslands go by different names around the world, like prairies, savannas, and steppes. These lands are home to some of the largest herds of animals on Earth.

Types of Grasslands

There are two main types of grasslands. Tropical grasslands, called savannas, are warm and have scattered trees. The African savanna is home to lions, zebras, and elephants. Temperate grasslands, like the prairies of North America, have hot summers and cold winters. Bison once roamed these prairies in huge herds.

Grasslands in Danger

Much of the world's grasslands have been turned into farmland. The rich soil that grasses create is perfect for growing crops. But when grasslands disappear, the animals that live there lose their homes. Grasslands also store carbon in their deep roots. Protecting grasslands helps fight climate change and saves wildlife.

Fun Facts

  • Grasslands cover about 40 percent of Earth's land surface.
  • Prairie grass roots can grow more than 15 feet deep into the soil!
  • The African savanna is home to the largest land animal migration in the world.
