Kelp Forest Ecosystems

Kelp forests are amazing underwater habitats made of giant seaweed. They grow in cool, shallow ocean waters along rocky coasts. Kelp can grow very fast and create thick underwater forests. These forests are home to hundreds of species of fish, mammals, and other sea creatures.

Giant Seaweed

Giant kelp is one of the fastest-growing living things on Earth. It can grow up to 2 feet in a single day! Kelp attaches to rocks on the ocean floor and stretches up toward the sunlight. Gas-filled bulbs on the kelp act like tiny balloons, helping it float upright.

Sea Otters and Kelp

Sea otters play a very important role in kelp forests. They eat sea urchins, which are small spiny animals that love to munch on kelp. Without sea otters, too many urchins would eat all the kelp. When sea otters are healthy, the whole kelp forest stays healthy too.
