Marine Ecosystems

Marine ecosystems are found in the salty waters of the ocean. They cover more than 70 percent of Earth's surface. From shallow tide pools to the deep sea floor, the ocean is full of life. Marine ecosystems are important for the whole planet because they produce oxygen and help control the climate.

Ocean Zones

The ocean is divided into different zones based on depth. The sunlight zone near the surface is where most sea life is found. Below that is the twilight zone, where less light reaches. The deep sea is cold, dark, and full of mysterious creatures. Each zone has its own special animals and plants.

Protecting the Ocean

Oceans face many threats like pollution, overfishing, and warming waters. Plastic trash can hurt sea turtles and other animals. Marine protected areas are special parts of the ocean where fishing and dumping are not allowed. By keeping the ocean clean, we help all the creatures that live there.

Fun Facts

  • Tiny ocean plants called phytoplankton produce more than half of the world's oxygen.
  • The deepest part of the ocean, the Mariana Trench, is almost 7 miles deep!
  • Scientists have explored less than 20 percent of the ocean floor.

Did You Know?

The ocean absorbs about 30 percent of the carbon dioxide that humans produce, helping to slow climate change!
