Marine Protected Areas
Marine Protected Areas
Marine protected areas are like parks in the ocean. They are places where fishing and other activities are limited to protect sea life. Fish, coral, and sea plants can grow and live safely inside them. These areas help keep the ocean healthy for everyone.
How They Work
In a marine protected area, rules keep people from harming the ocean. Some areas do not allow any fishing at all. Others let people fish only with certain tools. Boats may have to go slow to keep from hitting animals. Scientists often study the water and wildlife inside these safe zones.
Helping the Ocean
When sea animals are safe, they can grow bigger and have more babies. These animals then swim out to fill the rest of the ocean too. Coral reefs inside protected areas stay colorful and full of life. Protected spots also help save rare animals like sea turtles and whales. More than 8 percent of the ocean is now protected.
Fun Facts
