Saving Energy at Home
Every time you turn on a light, watch TV, or heat your home, you use energy. Most of this energy comes from burning fossil fuels, which causes pollution. Saving energy at home is one of the easiest ways to help the environment. It also saves your family money on electricity bills.
Easy Ways to Save
There are many simple ways to save energy at home. Turn off lights when you leave a room. Unplug chargers and electronics when you are not using them. Use LED light bulbs, which use much less electricity than old-style bulbs. In winter, wearing a sweater instead of turning up the heat also saves energy.
Big Savings
Some bigger changes can save even more energy. Adding insulation to a house keeps heat in during winter and out during summer. Energy-efficient appliances use less power to do the same job. Solar panels on the roof can make electricity from sunlight. Every bit of energy saved means less pollution in the air.
Fun Facts
- LED light bulbs use about 75 percent less energy than traditional bulbs and last 25 times longer!
- Phantom power from plugged-in devices that are turned off can account for 10 percent of a home's electricity use.
- If every home in America replaced one old light bulb with an LED, it would save enough energy to light 3 million homes for a year.
Did You Know?
A computer left on all day uses more energy than you might think. Turning it off at night can save about 65 dollars a year!
