Dutch Exploration
The Netherlands, also called Holland, was a small country with big dreams of exploration. In the 1600s, Dutch sailors traveled all over the world. They explored parts of Asia, Australia, Africa, and the Americas. The Dutch became some of the most successful traders and explorers of their time.
The Dutch East India Company
In 1602, the Dutch started a company called the Dutch East India Company. It was one of the most powerful trading companies in history. The company sent ships to Asia to buy spices like pepper, cinnamon, and cloves. These spices were very valuable in Europe. The company built forts and trading posts all over Southeast Asia.
Exploring New Lands
Dutch explorer Abel Tasman was the first European to reach New Zealand and Tasmania. Henry Hudson, sailing for the Dutch, explored the river in New York that is now named after him. The Dutch also settled in South Africa and parts of South America. Their explorations connected many parts of the world.
