Ernest Shackleton

Ernest Shackleton was an explorer from long ago. He was born in Ireland in 1874. He loved the sea and wanted to see new places. He is most famous for his trips to Antarctica. Antarctica is the coldest place on Earth. Shackleton led his men through ice, snow, and storms. He is known as a hero because he kept his crew safe.

Early Life

Ernest Shackleton was born in a small town in Ireland. His family moved to London when he was a boy. He loved reading books about faraway lands. At age 16, he left school to work on ships. He sailed all over the world. He learned how to be a strong sailor. Soon, he dreamed of going to the South Pole.

The Endurance Trip

In 1914, Shackleton and his crew sailed on a ship called the Endurance. They wanted to walk across Antarctica. But thick ice trapped the ship. The ice crushed the Endurance, and it sank. The men were stuck on the ice for months. Shackleton and a few men sailed a tiny boat to get help. He saved every single one of his crew. No one died!
