Scuba Diving

Scuba diving lets people explore the underwater world. Divers breathe from a tank of air on their back. The word scuba stands for Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus. Divers can see fish, coral, and shipwrecks up close.

The Gear

Divers wear a wetsuit to stay warm. They use a mask to see and fins to swim faster. An air tank is strapped to their back. A tube called a regulator lets them breathe the air.

Why People Dive

Some people dive just for fun and adventure. Others dive to study ocean life or repair underwater equipment. Scientists dive to learn about coral reefs. Divers must always be careful and follow safety rules.

Fun Facts
