The Endurance Expedition
The Endurance Expedition
The Endurance Expedition was led by a brave explorer named Ernest Shackleton. He wanted to walk across Antarctica in 1914. His ship, called the Endurance, got stuck in thick ice and was crushed. The whole crew had to find a way to stay alive in the freezing cold.
The Ship Gets Stuck
Shackleton and his 27 men sailed south to Antarctica. Their ship became trapped in pack ice before it could reach land. For months, the men lived on the ship as it drifted with the ice. Finally, the ice squeezed so hard that the ship broke apart and sank. The crew had to camp on the ice with their sleds and small boats.
The Amazing Rescue
The men sailed their small lifeboats to a rocky place called Elephant Island. Shackleton and five others then sailed 800 miles in a tiny boat to get help. They crossed huge waves in the stormy ocean. After a long journey, Shackleton came back and rescued every single man. Not one person died on the expedition.
