Food Allergies and Intolerances

Food allergies happen when a person's body thinks a certain food is harmful, even though it is not. The body's defense system overreacts and can cause symptoms like hives, swelling, or trouble breathing. Food intolerances are different and usually cause stomach problems. Both are important to understand so we can keep everyone safe.

Common Food Allergies

The eight most common food allergies are to milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, soy, fish, and shellfish. Peanut allergies are one of the most well-known because they can be very serious. Even a tiny amount of the food can cause a reaction in someone with an allergy. People with food allergies must always check what is in their food before eating it.

Staying Safe with Food Allergies

People with food allergies need to read food labels carefully. Restaurants are required to list common allergens on their menus. If someone has a severe allergic reaction, they may need to use a special medicine called an epinephrine auto-injector. Friends and classmates can help by being understanding and not sharing food without asking. Many schools are now peanut-free to keep allergic students safe.
