Mount Vesuvius

Mount Vesuvius is a big volcano in Italy. It stands near the city of Naples. Long ago, it erupted and covered the Roman city of Pompeii in ash. Today, it is one of the most famous volcanoes in the world.

The Big Eruption

In the year 79, Mount Vesuvius had a huge eruption. Hot ash and gas poured out of the top. The nearby city of Pompeii was buried deep under the ash. The people and their homes were frozen in time. Scientists later dug up Pompeii to learn about ancient Rome.

The Volcano Today

Mount Vesuvius is still an active volcano. That means it could erupt again someday. Scientists watch it every day to keep people safe. About three million people live close to the mountain. Visitors can even hike up to the top and peek inside the crater.

Fun Facts
