Route 66

Route 66 was one of the most famous roads in America. It ran from Chicago, Illinois, to Santa Monica, California. The highway was about 2,400 miles long. It helped people travel west and became a symbol of American adventure.

The Mother Road

Route 66 was built in 1926. It was one of the first highways to cross the country. People called it the Mother Road. During the 1930s, many families drove Route 66 to California to find work. Small towns, gas stations, and diners popped up along the road.

Route 66 Today

Route 66 was officially removed from the highway system in 1985 when newer, faster roads replaced it. But parts of the old road still exist. Tourists drive along the remaining sections to see old signs, diners, and motels. Route 66 is still a beloved part of American history.
