The Bay of Fundy
The Bay of Fundy
The Bay of Fundy is a large bay in eastern Canada. It sits between the provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. The bay is famous for its huge tides. The water level can change very quickly during the day.
The Biggest Tides
Tides are when sea water rises and falls. In the Bay of Fundy, the water can rise over 50 feet. That is as tall as a five-story building. This happens twice every day. No other place has bigger tides.
A Place for Wildlife
The bay is a great home for sea life. Whales come to feed every summer. You can see humpback whales, minke whales, and even rare right whales. Seals, puffins, and many fish also live there.
Fun Facts
- About 160 billion tons of water flow in and out of the bay each day.
- You can walk on the ocean floor at low tide in some spots.
- The tall rocks called the Hopewell Rocks were shaped by the tides.
Did You Know?
The strong tides of the Bay of Fundy even cause a river to flow backwards for part of the day.
