The Indian Ocean

The Indian Ocean is the third biggest ocean on Earth. It is named after the country of India. This ocean touches three continents. It is full of warm water, fish, and beautiful islands.

Where It Is

The Indian Ocean sits between Africa, Asia, and Australia. It is smaller than the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. The equator runs right through it, so the water is usually warm. Many big rivers, like the Ganges, flow into it. Thousands of islands also dot its waters.

Life and Trade

Many kinds of sea animals live in the Indian Ocean. Dolphins, whales, and sea turtles swim in its waves. Coral reefs grow near many of its islands. People have sailed across this ocean for thousands of years to trade goods. Spices, silk, and gold used to travel across it on wooden boats.
