The Rhine River
The Rhine River flows through western Europe. It starts in the Swiss Alps and ends in the North Sea. The river passes through Switzerland, Germany, France, and the Netherlands. The Rhine has been an important trade route for hundreds of years.
Castles and Vineyards
The middle part of the Rhine has many old castles on hills above the river. Some of these castles are over 700 years old. Vineyards grow on the steep slopes where people make wine. Tourists love to take boat rides to see the castles.
A Working River
The Rhine is one of the busiest rivers in the world for shipping. Big boats carry goods like coal, oil, and grain up and down the river. The city of Rotterdam in the Netherlands has one of the biggest ports in Europe. The river is also home to fish like salmon.
