Allergies

Allergies happen when your immune system reacts to something that is normally harmless. Things like pollen, dust, pet fur, or certain foods can trigger an allergic reaction. Allergies are very common in kids.

What Causes Allergies

Your immune system is supposed to protect you from germs. But sometimes it mistakes harmless things for invaders. These triggers are called allergens.

Common allergens include tree pollen, grass, dust mites, mold, and animal dander. Some kids are allergic to certain foods like peanuts, milk, or eggs.

Allergy Symptoms and Treatment

Allergies can cause sneezing, itchy eyes, a runny nose, or a rash. Some food allergies can cause more serious reactions. If someone has trouble breathing after eating something, they need help right away.

Doctors can test you to find out what you are allergic to. Medicine called antihistamines can help with symptoms. Avoiding your allergens is the best way to prevent reactions.
