Bus Safety

Many kids ride a school bus every day. Buses are one of the safest ways to get to school. But you still need to follow rules to keep yourself and others safe.

Getting On and Off the Bus

Wait for the bus to stop completely before getting on or off. Use the handrail when climbing the steps. If you drop something near the bus, do not pick it up. Tell the driver instead.

When crossing in front of the bus, walk at least ten big steps ahead so the driver can see you. Look both ways before crossing.

Riding the Bus Safely

Stay seated and face forward while the bus is moving. Keep your hands and arms inside the windows. Do not throw things or yell on the bus.

Listen to the bus driver. They are in charge of keeping everyone safe. Treat other riders the way you want to be treated.

Fun Facts

  • About 26 million kids ride school buses in the United States each day.
