Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates, or carbs, are one of the main parts of food. They are the main way your body gets energy. When you run, jump, or think, you use energy from carbs. Foods like bread, rice, and pasta are full of carbs. Fruits and vegetables have carbs too.

Where Carbs Come From

Most carbs come from plants. Wheat, corn, and potatoes all have lots of carbs. Sugar is also a type of carb, but a simple one. Whole grains like oatmeal and brown rice are the best kinds of carbs. They give you energy that lasts a long time.

How Your Body Uses Carbs

When you eat carbs, your body breaks them down into a sugar called glucose. Glucose travels in your blood to give energy to every part of your body. Your brain loves glucose and uses lots of it. Any extra glucose is saved for later. Eating the right amount of carbs keeps you active and happy.
