Conflict Resolution

Conflicts happen when people disagree or want different things. That is a normal part of life. The important thing is knowing how to solve problems without fighting or yelling.

Steps to Solve a Conflict

First, calm down. Take some deep breaths before you speak. Then, take turns telling your side of the story. Listen without interrupting.

Try to understand how the other person feels. Work together to find a solution that is fair for both of you. Sometimes you may need to compromise.

Using I Statements

Instead of blaming, use I statements. Say, I feel upset when you take my things, instead of, You always take my stuff. This helps the other person understand your feelings without getting defensive.

If you cannot solve the problem by yourselves, ask a teacher or parent to help. Getting help is not tattling. It is being smart.

Fun Facts

  • Most conflicts can be solved when both people truly listen to each other.
