Crosswalk Safety

A crosswalk is a safe place to cross the street. It is marked with white lines painted on the road. Cars are supposed to stop and let people walk across. But you still need to be careful every time.

How to Cross Safely

Always use a crosswalk when you can. Stop at the edge of the curb and look both ways. Look left, then right, then left again. Wait until no cars are coming before you step into the street. Walk, do not run, across the crosswalk.

Walk Signals

Some crosswalks have walk signals with a white walking person or a red hand. When you see the walking person, it is your turn to cross. When you see the red hand, stop and wait. Even with a walk signal, look both ways first. Drivers sometimes do not see people in the crosswalk.

Fun Facts

  • Crosswalks are sometimes called zebra crossings because of the stripes.
  • Some crosswalks make a beeping sound to help people who cannot see well.
  • Jaywalking means crossing the street where there is no crosswalk.
