Fire Safety

Fires can be very dangerous, but you can learn how to stay safe. Fire safety teaches you how to stop fires and what to do if one starts. Every family should have a fire safety plan. Knowing what to do could save your life.

Preventing Fires

Many fires can be stopped before they start. Never play with matches or lighters. Stay away from candles and hot stoves unless an adult is helping you. Smoke alarms beep loudly if there is smoke in your home. Make sure your home has working smoke alarms on every floor.

If There Is a Fire

If you hear a smoke alarm, get out of the house right away. Stay low to the floor because smoke rises up. Do not stop to grab toys or pets. Meet your family at a safe spot outside that you planned ahead of time. Call 911 from outside and never go back in the house.

Fun Facts

  • If your clothes catch fire, stop, drop, and roll to put it out.
  • Firefighters visit schools to teach kids about fire safety.
  • Smoke alarms should have their batteries changed twice a year.
