Helmet Safety
Helmet Safety
Your brain is one of the most important parts of your body. A helmet protects your head if you fall. Wearing one every time you ride or skate can prevent serious injuries.
When to Wear a Helmet
You should wear a helmet when you ride a bike, skateboard, scooter, or roller skates. Helmets are also needed for sports like baseball, football, and hockey.
Even if you are a good rider, accidents can happen. A helmet is your best protection against a head injury.
How a Helmet Should Fit
A helmet should sit level on your head, not tilted back. The straps should form a V shape under each ear. You should be able to fit only one or two fingers between the strap and your chin.
If your helmet has been in a crash, replace it. Even if it looks fine, it may be cracked inside and will not protect you as well.
Fun Facts
- Wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of head injury by up to 85 percent.
- Bicycle helmets have a layer of foam that crushes to absorb the force of a hit.
- Helmets come in many fun colors and designs so you can pick one you like.
