Pink Eye

Pink eye, also called conjunctivitis, happens when the clear lining over the white of your eye gets irritated or infected. It makes your eye look pink or red and feel itchy. Pink eye is very common in kids.

Types of Pink Eye

Pink eye can be caused by viruses, bacteria, or allergies. Viral and bacterial pink eye are very contagious, which means they spread easily. Allergic pink eye is not contagious.

Your eye may feel itchy, watery, or crusty. You might wake up with your eyelids stuck together from dried discharge.

Treatment and Prevention

If you have pink eye, see a doctor. Bacterial pink eye can be treated with eye drops that have medicine in them. Viral pink eye usually goes away on its own.

Wash your hands often and do not touch your eyes. Do not share towels or pillows with someone who has pink eye. Stay home from school until the doctor says it is okay to go back.
