Poison Safety
Some things in your home can make you very sick if you eat or drink them. Cleaning products, medicines, and some plants can be poisonous. Learning what to avoid keeps you safe.
Dangerous Items at Home
Cleaning sprays, detergent pods, and bleach are all poisons. Never eat or drink anything from a bottle under the sink. Medicine can help when a doctor says to take it, but too much can be harmful.
Some plants and berries outside can also be poisonous. Never eat something you find growing unless an adult says it is safe.
What to Do If Someone Is Poisoned
If you think someone swallowed something bad, tell an adult right away. The adult can call the Poison Help number: 1-800-222-1222. Do not try to make the person throw up unless a doctor says so.
Look for warning labels on bottles. Symbols like a skull or an exclamation mark mean the product is dangerous.
Fun Facts
- The Poison Help hotline in the U.S. gets over two million calls each year.
- Some animals, like poison dart frogs, use poison to protect themselves.
- Warning labels on bottles use bright colors so people notice them.
