Reflexes

A reflex is something your body does all by itself. You do not have to decide to do it. If you touch something hot, your hand pulls back right away. That is a reflex. Reflexes help keep you safe from harm.

How Reflexes Work

Reflexes happen because of your nerves. Nerves are like wires that carry messages in your body. When you touch something hot, a nerve sends a quick message. The message goes to your spine and then back to your muscles. All this happens in less than a second.

Types of Reflexes

There are many reflexes in your body. Blinking when something comes near your eye is a reflex. Sneezing to clear your nose is too. Doctors sometimes tap your knee to test a reflex. If your leg kicks, your reflexes are working fine.
