Staying Safe in Cold Weather
Staying Safe in Cold Weather
Cold weather can be fun for playing in the snow, but it can also be dangerous. If your body gets too cold, you can get frostbite or hypothermia. Dressing properly and knowing the warning signs keeps you safe.
Dressing for the Cold
Wear several layers of clothing. The layer closest to your skin should be warm and dry. Add a middle layer for warmth and an outer layer that blocks wind and water.
Always wear a hat, gloves, and warm socks. Your body loses a lot of heat through your head and hands. Wear boots that keep your feet dry.
Warning Signs
Frostbite happens when skin gets so cold it freezes. It usually affects fingers, toes, ears, and the nose. The skin may turn white or gray and feel numb.
Hypothermia is when your whole body gets too cold. Signs include shivering, confusion, and feeling very sleepy. If you or someone else shows these signs, go inside right away and tell an adult.
Fun Facts
- Your body shivers in the cold because the shaking muscles create heat.
- Wearing a hat can help prevent up to 10 percent of body heat loss.
- Antarctica is the coldest place on Earth, with temperatures reaching minus 128 degrees Fahrenheit.
