The Brain

Your brain is one of the most important parts of your body. It sits inside your skull and looks a bit like a big, wrinkly sponge. The brain tells the rest of your body what to do. It helps you think, learn, dream, and remember things. Every time you move, talk, or feel happy, your brain is hard at work.

What the Brain Does

The brain is like a busy boss. It sends messages to every part of your body through tiny wires called nerves. When you touch something hot, your brain tells your hand to pull away fast. It also helps you see, hear, smell, and taste. Your brain even works while you sleep. It keeps your heart beating and your lungs breathing without you having to think about it.

Parts of the Brain

The brain has different parts that each do a special job. The biggest part is called the cerebrum. It helps you think and solve problems. The cerebellum is at the back. It helps you balance and move smoothly. The brain stem connects your brain to your spine. It controls things like breathing and your heartbeat. All these parts work together as a team.

Fun Facts

  • Your brain has about 86 billion tiny cells called neurons that send messages super fast.
  • The brain uses about one fifth of all the energy your body makes each day.
  • Your brain keeps growing and changing every time you learn something new.

Did You Know?

Even though the brain helps you feel pain in other parts of your body, the brain itself cannot feel pain at all!
