The Common Cold
The Common Cold
The common cold is one of the most common illnesses in the world. It is caused by tiny germs called viruses. A cold can make you sneeze, cough, and feel tired, but you usually feel better in about a week.
Cold Symptoms
When you have a cold, your nose may run or feel stuffy. Your throat might feel scratchy or sore. You may cough, sneeze, and feel more tired than usual.
Sometimes you might have a mild headache or a low fever. These are signs that your body is fighting the virus.
Getting Better
There is no cure for the common cold, but you can do things to feel better. Drink lots of water and juice. Get plenty of rest. Warm soup can help soothe your throat.
Wash your hands often so you do not spread the cold to others. Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze. Most colds go away on their own.
Fun Facts
- There are over 200 different viruses that can cause a cold.
- Kids get about six to eight colds each year.
- You are most contagious during the first two to three days of a cold.
Did You Know?
The reason colds are more common in winter is not because of the cold weather itself, but because people spend more time close together indoors!
