The Flu

The flu, short for influenza, is a sickness caused by a virus. It is more serious than a regular cold. The flu can make you feel very tired with a high fever and achy muscles.

Flu Symptoms

The flu often starts suddenly. You might get a high fever, chills, and body aches. Your head may hurt and your throat may be sore. You might feel very tired and not want to eat.

The flu can also cause a cough and sometimes a stuffy nose. Most people feel sick for about one to two weeks.

Preventing the Flu

The best way to avoid the flu is to get a flu shot each year. The flu vaccine teaches your body how to fight the virus. Washing your hands often also helps.

If you get the flu, stay home so you do not spread it. Drink lots of fluids and rest. A doctor may give you medicine to help you feel better faster.
