Water Safety in Nature

Lakes, rivers, and oceans are fun places to swim and play. But natural water can be unpredictable. Knowing how to stay safe near water is very important.

Rules for Open Water

Never swim alone. Always have an adult watching you. Wear a life jacket if you are not a strong swimmer or if you are on a boat.

Stay away from fast-moving water in rivers and streams. Currents can be much stronger than they look and can pull you under.

Ocean Safety

At the beach, swim near a lifeguard. If you get caught in a rip current, swim sideways along the shore until you are free. Do not try to swim straight back to shore.

Watch out for waves and never turn your back to the ocean. Check for flags or signs that warn about water conditions.

Fun Facts

  • A life jacket can keep you floating even if you get tired in the water.
  • Rip currents are the number one hazard at the beach.
  • Learning to swim is one of the best ways to stay safe around water.
