Weather Safety

Weather can change quickly. Sometimes storms bring lightning, strong winds, or heavy rain. Knowing what to do during bad weather can keep you and your family safe.

Thunderstorm Safety

When you hear thunder, go inside right away. Lightning can be very dangerous. Stay away from windows and do not use water during a thunderstorm.

If you are stuck outside, crouch down low. Do not stand under a tree. Trees can attract lightning.

Being Prepared

Your family can make an emergency kit with water, flashlights, and snacks. Listen to weather reports on the radio or TV. Know where the safest room in your house is.

Practice what to do in different kinds of storms. The more you practice, the calmer you will feel when bad weather comes.

Fun Facts

  • Lightning can be five times hotter than the surface of the sun.
  • The safest place during a thunderstorm is inside a building.
  • Weather forecasters use satellites in space to track storms.
