Machu Picchu
Machu Picchu is a famous place in the country of Peru. It was built by the Inca people about 600 years ago. The city sits high up on a mountain. It has stone houses, temples, and farm steps called terraces. Today, it is one of the most visited places in the world.
The Inca Builders
The Inca were a smart and strong group of people. They built Machu Picchu without using any metal tools or wheels. They fit huge stones together so tightly that a knife cannot slide between them. The city had places to pray and to grow food. It may have been a home for the Inca ruler.
Hidden in the Clouds
Machu Picchu was left empty after the Spanish came to Peru. The jungle grew over it, and it was almost forgotten. In 1911, an explorer named Hiram Bingham found it again. He told the world about this amazing place. Now people visit from all over the globe.
