Medieval Castles
Castles were huge homes built in the Middle Ages. That was the time from about 1,000 to 500 years ago. Kings, queens, and lords lived in them. Castles had thick stone walls and tall towers. They were built to keep the people inside safe from enemies.
Parts of a Castle
A castle had many parts to help defend it. A wide ditch called a moat often went around the outside. A drawbridge could be pulled up to stop enemies from crossing. Tall thick walls protected the buildings inside. The strongest tower was called the keep. It was the safest place when enemies attacked.
Life in a Castle
Many people lived and worked in a castle. There were lords, ladies, knights, servants, and cooks. They ate big meals in the great hall. Knights trained for battle in the courtyard. Castles had cold stone rooms and were often drafty. At night, rooms were lit by candles and fireplaces.
